Knitted ’shrooms with eyes

shrooms

Never made a knitting pattern before. Kinda proud of these. They’re about palm-sized and according to some, make excellent cat toys if you happen to have cats that don’t destroy things. If you find this and want to use it commercially or sell these, let me know and we’ll talk. Pattern below.

–start with light color – make stem
CO 6 on one needle, leave about 3 inch yarn tail
row 1: k6
distribute on 3 needles to work in round
row 2: kfb all stsĀ  (12 sts)
row 3-7: k (5 rounds)
row 8: [k2tog, k2] repeat (9 sts)
row 9: k
row 10: [k2tog, k1] repeat (6 sts)
–change color to dark – make the “gills” part
row 11: kfb all sts (12 sts)
row 12: kfb all sts (24 sts)
row 13: [kfb, k3] repeat (30 sts)
–change color to white – make the cap
row 14: k
row 15: p
row 16-17: k (2 rounds)
–now would be a good time to put stuffing in the stem part so it doesn’t get too difficult
row 18: [k2tog, k8] repeat (27 sts)
row 19: k
row 20: [k2tog, K7] repeat (24 sts)
row 21: k
row 22: [K2tog, K2] repeat (18 sts)
row 23: k
row 24: [k2tog, K1] repeat (12 sts)
row 25: k
–put stuffing in the cap
–draw yarn through loops and tighten to close
–use tapestry needle to draw yarn straight through the center of the mushroom down to the bottom of the stem
–tie snugly with the yarn tail left at the beginning and weave ends in

–add eyes if you like, mine are just black yarn wrapped around a single stitch 4 times

Made 2 of these. I believe that Row 22 should be [K2tog, K2] Love the pattern!

  2. Abby Says:

Whoops! You’re right. Thanks for the fix. I’ve edited it. Glad you like them!

These are so cute! I’m so making some for my kitties. And my nieces. And my friend’s little girls. Talk about great stash-busters – the girls are gonna love these in pink and purple! (I know those aren’t authentic ’shroom colors, but we’re talking little girls here. Their ’shrooms HAVE to be pink or purple.)

  4. Tracy Says:

    What size needles are used?

  5. LJ Says:

hooray! first purple mushroom completed (‘cept for eyes) and it’s so cute and was so easy! Thanks for sharing the pattern – these are so fun!

  6. LJ Says:

almost done with the 2nd ’shroom in dark green and brown for teenage daughter who tried to swipe the purple ’shroom. Her kitty DID swipe the purple ’shroom and was batting it all over the living room. Looking at the little claw snags in it, I’d recommend if you’re knitting these for kitty toys to use wool and full or felt them for sturdiness. Gonna try that next.

Apologies for not addressing comments sooner. I believe I used size 5.5 or 6 needles. Glad the pattern is being used and enjoyed!

Hi Abby, These are really cute! And I think someone else thought so too. You should check this link: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=31965919

My apologies if they had permission.

Thanks! I’ve been digging around forever for a good mushroom pattern. How would you felt these?

  10. Abby Says:

If you are a member at Ravelry, there is someone who made them and felted them. Here’s a link: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Drin/knitted-shrooms

I haven’t tried yet. you’d probably have to experiment.
